How I Landed My First Big Client and What I Learned

Writer: Vijay PallVijay Pall

For a long time...

I worked on different projects around Birmingham, trying to find my footing. I dabbled in various roles, but nothing truly clicked until I started focusing on working with bigger companies. However, landing clients at that level was a challenge. Most of them already had established teams handling their video content, making it tough to break in.

On Set!
On Set!

So, I decided to take a different approach.

I offered to do work for free, not just to showcase my skills but to build connections within their network. My strategy was simple: tag everyone involved, maximize my exposure, and let my work speak for itself. This approach put my content in front of the right people and helped me gain visibility among industry professionals.

One of those professionals was a marketing assistant who noticed my work. That connection led me to land a huge job—one that changed everything for me. It was my breakthrough moment, allowing me to finally afford my first car and proving that the effort I had put in was paying off.

Through this experience, I learned three lessons:

You're never fully ready—just start. There’s no perfect moment to take on a big project. You learn as you go, and experience is the best teacher.

You never know who's watching. Your next opportunity could come from someone silently observing your work, so always put your best effort into every project.

Persistence is key. At my lowest points, when I felt like giving up, something always came along to push me forward. Staying consistent through hard times is what leads to success.

If you're struggling to land clients or feel like your work isn’t getting noticed, keep going. Do the work, make strategic connections, and trust that your moment will come. It did for me, and it can for you too.

If you want help landing your first client do message ! I've love to help or alternatively what was your first big client and share how you did it!

Until next time 🙏
